As the capstone of your work in the course, you are asked to complete a Research Paper which is at least 4 double-spaced pages long, and which draws together all of the skills you have acquired over the course of the semester.

Your paper should deal with one or more of the themes
 of the course (ideology, government, gender, and social class) and discuss how it/they have changed over the course of the history of Western Civilization after 1650.

Search for books on your topic in the library catalog.

Sample keywords include:

  • women and Ancient Egypt
  • women and Ancient Egypt and social conditions 
  • women and Greece and social conditions

Select 'Request Item' to have books from other NOVA libraries sent to Loudoun for pick up. If your book is at Loudoun be sure to write down the call number in order to locate the book on the shelf.

E-books and e-videos are accessible through the catalog. If you see any in your search results, click 'Online access' to open.


The best way to locate articles is through the library databases.  Go to Databases by Subject and look under the category History (HIS) to find a list of relevant databases. You can also perform a search in the databases below.

Remember not to write sentences in the search box. Search by topic keywords.

Look for additional keywords offered under Subject and Subject Thesaurus. Also make sure you look for toolbars that provide print, email, and citation options.
