ENG 111: College Composition I (AL) - Privilege: Background Info & Topic Ideas

General Topic Exploration and Background Info

Encyclopedia articles provide context, main ideas, and detailed definitions.
Encyclopedia articles typically are not used as a source in your research paper - they are usually used to learn background information.

Search for general topics.  Type the word AND between each new idea.
For example:

social justice
white privilege
inequality AND education
access AND health care

Ideas for Focusing a Topic

Opposing Viewpoints includes many kinds of articles, including magazine, newspaper, and viewpoints articles.  When you are looking for ways to focus a topic or make a general topic arguable, look for the Viewpoints articles.

You can type a general topic in the search box (e.g., equal AND education       inequality AND education).
Each Viewpoints article will discuss one side of an argument.
