Researching Controversial Topics

The resources on this page can help you identify controversies related to topics you're researching.

After you learn more about the controversy you're researching -- such as who's involved, reasons behind supporting one side or the other, possible solutions -- you can take those ideas back to the article databases under the Magazine, Newspaper, and Journal Articles tab (ProQuest) to search for more information.

Issues & Controversies

Issues & Controversies provides two points of view on many controversial topics.

You can either type in a topic or browse the topics and sub-topics.

Opposing Viewpoints

Opposing Viewpoints has many resources, including magazine, newspaper, and journal articles.  It also has essays and articles that present one side of a controversial topic - these are called Viewpoints.

To find the Viewpoints articles, after you type in your topic, look at the range of results across the top of the page - select Viewpoints.
If there are no Viewpoints essays on the topic you typed in, try alternate, related ideas or a broader approach to the topic.
