ART 106: History of Modern Art (Online): Research an Artist

A research guide for students in online sections of ART 106.

Tips for researching an artist

1) Before you begin: Use Wikipedia to gather basic facts about the artist

[IMPORTANT: This step is "pre-reseach". You won't use Wikipedia as a source in your paper.]

  • Check you have the correct spelling of their name
  • Verify country of origin
  • Verify when this artist was active

2) Use Oxford Art Online (linked below) to get credible, authoritative information to cite in your paper:

  • a biography of the artist
  • background on the artist's style/historical period
  • a list of the artist's best known works

3) Use Art & Architecture Source (linked below)  to dig deeper:

  • Start with a simple search: just use the name of the artist
  • Too many results? try the artist's name AND the title of an art work, or the style of their art
  • Limit your search results to sources required for your assignment (peer reviewed articles? any kind of article? no book reviews?)
  • Need help? Ask the librarian!

COMMON PROBLEMS

  1. Nothing on your artist specifically? Look for articles about the art work, period, style, materials, etc.
