Indigenous agriculture systems, which predate the permaculture movement by thousands of years, are a highly sophisticated, efficient forms of agriculture that take into account the whole ecosystem, and emphasize human stewardship. Ethnobotany is the study of how people of a particular culture and region make use of the plants native to that region.
Permaculture looks at agriculture in systems of succession, where all of the plants serve supporting roles for the whole garden; and pulls heavily from Indigenous agriculture practices.
Organic gardening focuses on soil health and amendments, and pest control strategies that do not involve modern fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides.
Climate change gardening takes into consideration the changing world we live in, and how to garden while planning for more extreme weather conditions.
