How to...Find Primary Sources

Types of Primary Sources

A primary source is direct evidence or firsthand testimony of an event or time period.

Primary sources take many shapes. Want to search or browse by format? Format means the shape, arrangement, or presentation of information: for example, a note someone wrote on a piece of paper; or a T-shirt that someone wore.

Letters and manuscripts,

diaries and journals,

newspapers and magazines,

speeches, interviews, and memoirs,

photos and videos, data, and physical objects

...are all different formats in which you might find primary sources.
