A great place to start your research on a topic in art history is Grove Art Online. This database is the online version of the The Grove Dictionary of Art, which consists of 34 volumes. Grove Art Online is one of the resources on the Oxford Art Online platform, which is produced by Oxford University Press.
The Oxford Art Online platform contains two major resources:
Grove Art Online
Benezit Dictionary of Artists
It also contains several smaller resources:
The Concise Dictionary of Art Terms (2nd ed.)
Encyclopedia of Aesthetics (2nd ed.)
The Oxford Companion to Western Art
For more information about the Oxford Art Online platform, see this About page. For more information about Grove Art Online, see this About page. For more information about the Benezit Dictionary of Artists, see this About page.
NOVA Libraries subscribe to Grove Art Online but not to the Benezit Dictionary of Artists. This is why the Oxford Art Online homepage says, “Welcome to Grove Art Online.” It’s also why the drop-down menu next to the search field on the homepage is set to Grove Art Online by default. If you perform a search without changing any settings, all of your results will come from Grove Art Online and you’ll be able to access all of the content.
The other option in the drop-down menu next to the search field is Oxford Art Online. When you perform a search using this setting, some of your results will come from Grove Art Online and some will come from the Benezit Dictionary of Artists. You will have access to the former but will not have access to latter.
Above the list of results, you'll see a link named "Search for [the keywords that you entered] in The Concise Dictionary of Art Terms, Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, and The Oxford Companion to Western Art." If you click on this link, the database will search the three smaller resources listed above for the keywords that you entered previously. Since these three resources are included with a subscription to either Grove or Benezit (or both), you will be able to access those as well. I have not found a way to search only these resources without searching either Grove Art Online or Benezit Dictionary of Artists first.
Sometimes, the drop-down menu next to the search field does not appear. This situation (in my experience, at least) is equivalent to having selected Oxford Art Online from the drop-down menu.
