ENG 111 Research Assignment

Topic options:

  • Cause OR effect.  Develop a cause-or-effect argument in which you examine and analyze either key causes leading up to the event or key effects resulting from the event. Options include:
    • A specific human disaster, such as a ship sinking or a great city fire. 
    • An invention.
    • A historical figure.
    • A national or local government policy.
    • Another topic of your choice (this must be approved by your professor).

Guidelines:

  • The topic you choose will be of appropriate scope (not too broad, not too narrow).
  • For this paper, databases available through NVCC’s library facility must be utilized.  Google searches are not allowed.  Part of the research process will be dedicated to verifying the sources of your data and information. Please take sufficient time to determine whether adequate information can be found on your topic.
  • Strategies other than the dominant one (cause or effect), such as description, narration, or example, are encouraged to be used. 
  • No two students may research the same topic.
  • You may not use a topic you have already researched for another class.
  • The paper will follow MLA format for in-text citations and the works cited page. 
  • A minimum of five different sources from databases or print materials will be used and cited in completing this paper.

Dual Enrollment Information

Off-campus access to online library resources is available to current NOVA students, faculty and staff.

Use your MyNOVA username and password when prompted.  If you have forgotten your username or password, you can look up your MyNOVA username and password.

Students may park in “B” lots for FREE without a permit, after 3:45 p.m. on weekdays and anytime on weekends. Prior to that time, students without a parking permit may utilize NOVA’s hourly mobile pay option through Passport Mobile Pay to park in any ‘B’ Lot.

NOVACard is the official identification card of Northern Virginia Community College. All NOVA students are encouraged to get a free NOVACard in order to access many benefits and services. It is also your library card, which you will use to borrow materials, and the card you will use to pay for printing or photocopying.

To get your NOVACard, create a free account. Then upload a favorite photo and stop by any NOVACard office to pick up your new NOVACard.

You can also add funds to your card's account in order to print/photocopy while on campus.
