Edited Volumes
Essay-length papers are sometimes collected in edited volumes on a topic, such as a narrow subfield (such as Hellenistic Philosophy) or a particular philosophical text (such as Spinoza’s Ethics). Because they offer a number of different perspectives on the same subject, they can be a good resource when first starting on a subject. Below are two major series of edited volumes, but they are by no means the only series.
Cambridge Companions – The Cambridge Companion series covers a number of areas in Philosophy and Religion. The campus libraries have some of these volumes circulating (such as the Cambridge Companion to Ancient Ethics), but you may have to submit an Intercampus Loan Request for pick up at Loudoun (select the Borrowing menu item and scroll down to review Intercampus Loans).
A collection of eBooks curated by NOVA librarians on a variety of different subjects. eBooks can be accessed in the browser or downloaded for offline use. (NVCC)
Coverage includes over 21,000 eBooks from the early 1900s to today; New titles added monthly. Subjects span nearly every discipline and include both fiction and non-fiction titles.
Oxford Scholarship Online offers full-text access to scholarly works from key disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, science, medicine, and law. Select "Unlocked" and "Free" to view the full-text books. (VIVA)
