What is Cultural Competency and Cultural Humility?

Cultural competence is the ability of an individual to understand and respect values, attitudes, beliefs, and mores that differ across cultures, and to consider and respond appropriately to these differences in planning, implementing, and evaluating health education and promotion programs and interventions. (American Association of Health Education)

Cultural humility is the “ability to maintain an interpersonal stance that is other-oriented (or open to the other) in relation to aspects of cultural identity that are most important to the [person]” (Hook et al., 2013, p. 353-54).

Hello and welcome!  This guide has been created by librarians at Northern Virginia Community College to help you find books, articles, videos, and other types of resources related to the concepts of Cultural Competency and Cultural Humility.
