Use the formats below to cite images you access online. If you cannot find all of the information, fill in as much as you can. If you cannot find a date associated with the image, use N.d. (stands for no date) instead.


Images, including paintings, sculptures, and photographs accessed online


Artist's last name, first name. Title of work. Date of creation. Institution, city where work is housed. Name of website/database.  Web. Date of access. <URL optional>.

If the artwork was viewed in person, change "Web" to the medium of the work, for example "Painting."


Photographs and images that exist only online


Artist's last name, first name or username. Photograph title or description. Date of publication (substitute N.d. if there is no date listed). Museum/Collection if applicable. Name of website/database. Web. Date of access. <URL optional>.

Recorded Music


Name of artist, or composer (comp.) or performers (perf.) if appropriate. "Song Title." Album Title. Names of additional performers, etc. Name of recording manufacturer, publication date (or n.d. if date is not known). Medium.

Movie title in italics. Dir. name of director. Perf. names of relevant performers. Film studio or distibutor, release year. Film.

You may emphasize specific directors or performers by beginning the citation with their name.

Recorded films and movies

This citation will be the same format as above, but instead of "Film," end the citation with the format of the recording.

Title of episode in quotation marks. Name of the series or program in italics. Network name. Call letters of station, City. Date of broadcast. Television.

Recorded Television


Title of episode in quotation marks. Name of series or program in italics, or title of collection, if different than title of the series. Distributor name, date of distribution. DVD or other medium of publication. 

You may also choose to include other contributors' information. List names after the title of the collection with the appropriate abbreviations (dir., perf, writ., prod.).
