Obtain:
To obtain a Community Patron Card, community members must verify their name and show proof of Virginia residency or affiliation with a Virginia school. A Virginia driver’s license or Virginia state ID covers both. Additional options include, but are not limited to:
Borrow:
Community patrons may borrow up to 10 items at a time, for 3 week loan periods. Renewals permitted, so long as the item is not overdue or been requested by another patron.
Electronic Resources:
Community patrons can access databases, e-books, and other online materials on-campus only, using public access computers in the library.
These instructions are ONLY for creating a Community Patron completely UNAFFILIATED with NOVA. DO NOT use this for a graduate, former student, or new student whose SIS records haven’t yet made it into Alma.
Required Role: Circulation Desk Operator or Manager OR Circulation Desk Operator – Limited (student workers)
1. To search for a previous patron record, navigate to Manage Patron Services (Fulfillment > Checkout/Checkin > Manage Patron Services).
2. In the search box, you can enter their name in either order, First Name first, or Last Name first. If no record is found, create a new community record.
3. Click on green Register New User link in the upper right screen.
4. Enter the Mandatory and Recommended Information:

5. Using a new Patron barcode (located at your campus's circulation desk), update the Primary Identifier field with the barcode number.
6. Click the dark green "Update user" button in the top right button.
